AP English Students Need Contemporary African-American Novel
Help me give my students 65 copies of Kindred, a contemporary novel by an African-American woman, so it can become a permanent staple in our AP English Literature curriculum.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want each and every one of my students to feel the exhilaration that comes from suddenly finding yourself in the middle of a truly life-changing book, and not wanting it to end. It won't happen for every student with every book, but the more we read, the better the odds get.
I am inspired by my students every day.
They work incredibly hard even though the odds are stacked against them. My job is to give them the tools they need to overcome those odds, graduate college and make a difference in the world. At my school, all students must take AP English Literature. However, our district will not provide a textbook for AP classes, leaving us to constantly scramble to find readings.
Our students are creative, critical thinkers who strive for social justice even though many of them have experienced immense inequalities. Many of our students are immigrants who have to fight to learn a new language and succeed in a society that does not always welcome them. Over 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite these obstacles, our students have been incredibly successful in winning prestigious scholarships and attending renowned universities.
My Project
Due to limited resources, most of the novels we possess are canonical works by white men. Octavia Butler's acclaimed novel, Kindred, will expose students to a diverse, contemporary voice and an exciting, genre-bending style unlike any text they have ever read. In addition to an AP essay that analyzes Butler's manipulation of time in the novel, students will write their own short story about a historical time period. Students will research a time period that they find interesting and then create a historically accurate narrative in which a character they have created is transported to this time period and must fit in and conceal their true identity in order to keep safe and/or achieve some objective, just like the protagonist in Kindred who travels back to the Antebellum South during slavery. Students will then share their stories in a public forum and experience what it is like to be a real author.
