Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science." (Hubble) I teach 4 different subjects, so my classroom is filled with a wealth of variety. I strive to provide hands on experiences to intrigue and motivate my students. My kids "do" science.
Our school is wonderfully diverse, with students from all cultures, socioeconomic conditions, and background experiences.
About 60% of our students are from low income households. Often, they are the first in their family with hopes of attending college. They are excited about learning, eager to please, and longing for a chance to succeed. Our school works very hard to allow equal access for all of our students to participate and succeed in A-G sciences and AP courses to maximize their chances of attending top colleges and universities. Providing these opportunities requires funding that we often lack.
My Project
My AP Chemistry students will use the kits to fulfill the College Board requirement for 16 formal labs. This set of labs includes investigations with spectroscopy, titrations, calorimetry, buffering, kinetics, and stoichiometry. All of these labs require formal lab reports kept in laboratory notebooks that are often required by colleges and universities for admission. My physiology students will use the sheep hearts to study the cardiovascular system, and the cow eyes to study the sensory system. Such dissection experiences provide concrete and comprehensible examples for physiological concepts. My conceptual physics students will use the constant velocity cars in a variety of experiments to learn about motion and forces. They enjoy the hand-on demonstration of the often difficult concepts of physics.
Donations for my project will make science more interesting and memorable for my students.
When class is more interesting, the students are more likely to succeed. When students succeed, the doors are opened for their future. They have have more choices for where they go to college and what they can study.
