My students are respectful and humble young adults who want to have the same opportunities that their neighboring richer town students already have. This is only the second year we offer AP Calculus BC at our school and we are making big strides.
I am on my sixth year teaching mathematics at our High School.
I graduated from the College of the Holy Cross with a degree in Mathematics and a minor in Physics, got a Masters in Mathematics for Educators from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute and am currently in my second semester of getting a Masters in Business Administration from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. This is my first year teaching AP Calculus BC. I am loving it, but I feel that I should get trained by a professional who has taught it for a lot longer than I have.
My Project
I plan to attend the AP Summer Institute - Advanced Placement Summer Institute in Calculus BC, a six-day workshop from July 19th to July 24th that promises to meet the needs of the individual participants to ensure that each teacher returns to the classroom with increased confidence and strategies for success. We will go through past exams, both multiple choice and free response; look at this year’s free response exam in depth and discuss classroom and assessment strategies. We will leave with several textbooks, reference books, and a flash drive with all of the handouts. This material will be imperative in the success of my AP Calculus BC class next year. College Board runs a great AP Calculus BC program and curriculum, but they do not provide the teachers with enough support and past exam questions to better prepare the students.
This workshop will provide me with extra knowledge and materials so that I can be a better teacher and help my students next year achieve a score of 3 or higher and subsequently, two college credits.
