Staying on the cutting edge of science is expensive. With more educational opportunities for students today, they are expected to know more and more when leaving high school. AP courses are a way to make students more competitive. Labs are a necessity in an AP Biology classroom.
My school is located in North Carolina.
We are on the outskirts of a very large school district. The school is relatively new so the science department is still building a base of equipment and supplies. The students here are extremely motivated and bright. They are college bound and want to be competitive in the acceptance race today.
My Project
Science is overwhelming and daunting for many people. Many of the topics in AP Biology are microscopic and abstract. The only way to create concrete learning environments for the students is to incorporate hands-on laboratory investigations. Supplies are needed for this task. There are two groups of materials I am requesting. One set is AP Biology specific lab materials and kits. These will make it possible for my students to complete 10 of the 13 AP Biology College Board Labs. These labs are required and are referenced in the AP Biology test. The lab materials, such as balances and electrophoresis chambers make the labs run more smoothly in a large class and gives students a chance to use those tools. The second set of materials is technology based. The iPad minis will allow students to communicate data, post photos and videos and use multimedia to publish their science findings. These skills are very hard to achieve with only one desktop computer in the classroom.
To become productive members of society in our ever changing global space, do not need to know the function of cell communication.
They do, however, need interpersonal communication skills, technology skills and problem solving skills. With these materials, I can give them practice in all of these areas so they can contribute to society and live happy, productive lives.
