Resilient, curious and diverse - that's how I describe my 250 students. My visual arts classroom is filled with students from many cultures. Through art we learn about identity, we practice empathy, we celebrate our different cultures and we learn from each other's perspectives and experiences.
"It is because art is and has always been the thing that sustains us, the thing that gives us language that we otherwise don't have the vocabulary for, it is the thing that connects people around this common moment, this common feeling, this common melody..."-Dr. Clint Smith III.
This project will buy beautiful, hardcover art books that cover the variety of mediums we study but, more importantly, represent, celebrate and honor our diverse student population. Every day my classroom is a safe space for all students. Throughout the day, as I welcome students entering my classroom, I watch them grab a book from our class library before they sit down. Whether the act is to find inspiration, nurture mental health or pure curiosity, the impression the images leave is powerful.
Representation is fundamental; students need to see people that look like them, artwork that celebrates their cultures and artists with similar experiences that have healed through their work.
These books cover the variety of mediums we explore including photography, collage, painting and fashion. More importantly, these books give my students more access and exposure to BIPOC artists such as Guerrilla Girls, Graciela Iturbide, Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama.
