Answer the Storytime Call. Space On Our Carpet For All!
My students need a rug that outlines where to sit so they can maintain personal space and enjoy stories and activities in the open space area of our library.
My students are inquisitive and full of laughter. As a Teacher Librarian, the whole school population cycles through my classroom twice a week. Students across the grade levels make personal connections to learning that enrich the class and build community.
They know how to persevere when things at home or school get tough.
Yet they always have a smile for me in the hallway, or a shouted hello from the soccer field as I leave for the day.
Our urban school is in a historically underserved part of the city. Our students are used to doing more with less, but they shouldn't always have to. Whether it's a stop motion animation project, coding, or bubbling on about their favorite graphic novel, my students are passionate and capable.
My Project
Having a specialized rug that delineates personal space will help our students focus on absorbing and interacting with stories, activities and literacy lessons in our library. Many of our students are working on improving their social-emotional skills. This rug will help students visualize what it means to have a personal bubble and help prevent elbows and knees making unwelcome visits to other bodies.
This rug will act as a grounding space to help students feel they are all valued, they all have an equal space and an equal voice.
This particular rug has a literal "spot" of color that will provide an opportunity to talk about multiple meanings of words. The pattern on the rug will also allow for flexibility in grouping students. The rug will act as a visual example of what it means to be part of a group. Interacting in partners, small groups, whole group and independently are all possibilities in the library. The rug will not only serve the smallest Kinders, but our 5th graders as well. In addition, the presence of this rug will increase the coziness and comfort of our library space as well as contribute to an overall organized aesthetic.
