As an elementary school music teacher in an urban, primarily low-income area, I work with students who some days come to school tired, hungry, or stressed. For many of these students, music is an escape; it provides them with many opportunities to showcase their talents, build lifelong skills, and create something truly unique.
My students are both ethnically and socioeconomically diverse, like the wonderful community we are a part of.
Many of my students live in the same apartment complex and because of this, there is a very family-like feel between many of them. They love to move, sing, and create music. Their cultural differences and similarities come together and help them in making wonderful music together every day.
My Project
Learning virtually, my students love seeing visuals, especially demonstrations, to help them learn and understand concepts. As their music teacher, I share many of these visuals with my students using my own screen space while doing my best to simultaneously observe them apply the new knowledge. However, with classes of 15-20 students, this becomes impossible to do accurately, and so I find myself modeling things for them that they'll be doing later in the week when much of their understanding has been forgotten.
A second screen would allow me to see and teach them far more effectively.
With one monitor, my screen space doubles. Not only would I be able to better organize every visual aspect of the lesson, but I could finally see my content and students at the same time.
