My students need sanders and a dust collection system to create beautiful finished projects!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our students face challenges daily. They do not have the resources that many students their age do that come from other areas. Our town has a very small tax base and leaves our district with little funding for things outside of the basic necessities.
School, for a lot of our students, is the safest place.
They know when they come here that they are cared about. They know that we are here to help them be successful and we try very hard to provide them with as many opportunities as possible. However, there are a lot of things that we can't do because we do not have the funding for it. Sometimes it is a lack of funding for a tool or resource; other times it is having to lay teachers or staff off.
The dust collection system on our sanding station has bit the dust! It literally started smoking and sputtered out as I rushed over to pull the plug before it caught fire. Needless to say, we are in need of a new dust collector. Our palm sanders are also old school and hard to replace the sand paper if they aren't broken
My students spend a lot of time planning and building projects.
The final step is the finishing process which begins with everyone's favorite shop task....sanding! Without our dust collection, sanding projects is a dusty mess and discouraging for my students. They do not like to be dusty for the rest of the day so the put little effort into sanding. A powerful dust collector solves this problem and removes the flying dust straight from the sanders before it hits the air. Also, replacing the old school sand paper sheets on a sander takes a lot of time and when you only have 45 minutes every second counts. The new-age sanders with hook and loop paper save a ton of time, are less frustrating for students, and produce better results.
