Our classroom/school is in a small, isolated community in rural Oregon. We are a farming/ranching and military-based county. We are eager to learn and share our experiences with the world around us.
Our goal is to be able to see the world and others perspectives from our own room.
The reality is that many will not be presented with the opportunity to travel and see the world. It is through our education that we can learn and appreciate where others come from.
With a class set of Anne Franks story, "The Diary of a Young Girl," my students will read and learn about the Holocaust. Living in such a remote section of America means we do not have many opportunities to visit museums and learn about major historical events in an very hands on way. Having a class set will help my students relate to history.
One of the best ways for students to understand history is to learn about it through the eyes of children their own age.
"The Diary of a Young Girl" is a classic autobiography and it will be through Anne Franks words that my students will begin their own journey. Reading this book will help students better relate to and therefor understand and empathizes with those that suffered during the Holocaust.
