Our school is a public Montessori school in Alaska. Our teaching philosophy supports following the child. We strive to create a learning environment that is prepared for and centered around all of our children's interests. It is our job to help spark curiosity within our students so that they may learn to love learning. Our goal is to help mold each of our children to be life-long learners.
Our students are extraordinary because they are not afraid to be creative, to be curious, to question the world around them, to care for one another, to stand up for themselves and their peers, or to push themselves beyond their frustrations.
Due to our school being Montessori, we spend three full school years together. We have our kids from first through third grade. We have more than a teacher-student relationship; our classes become a family.
Our school serves many military families. We understand what it takes to nurture the academic and social-emotional needs of these students and families during deployment and all transitions they may experience. Our philosophy allows for military students to quickly adjust to our learning style and gives them the opportunity to explore the world around them.
My Project
The core of the Montessori curriculum are our Great Lessons. These are 5 independent science and cultural lessons that create a sequential timeline from the beginning of the universe to modern day time.
The Animals and Book for The Black Ribbon material that we are requesting will allow the students to recreate the second Great Lesson, the Coming of Life, in which they will be able to manipulate and explore the different varieties of life that have evolved over time.
This material is expensive so for the past 6 years I have pieced together items that the kids can use for the introductory lesson and to begin their research with. However, the materials I found are either very small or very fragile so the kids have limited access to them. Having this material would allow the kids more freedom to manipulate the work and to engage more with the timeline.
