Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach special needs students in a small, rural community. My class consists of TK-second grade. It is a small, but mighty class.
My students have a variety of learning needs.
Disabilities include autism, intellectually delays, speech impaired, behavioral, and severely learning disabled. These needs provide the students with challenges - not just challenges in learning, but challenges to do things that others take for granted. Each student is taught individually using items that motivate them. This makes learning not feel like learning. For some, it provides the motivation to learn and communicate.
My Project
Studies state that phonics is an important aspect of learning to read. What does this mean to students with severe learning delays or with severe articulation delays? These students are my students, the students who need a variety of methods and materials to learn. I work hard to individualize each student's lessons.
One of the ways to get the students to remember the sounds associated with each letter is to provide something they like and can anchor the sound to.
My students love animals. I've used stuffed animals to help. It has, but I don't have enough for the whole alphabet. Since using a few animals, my students have begun to make that association. It's been exciting to see their growth, almost magical. I just need more animals to make the magic continue.
