Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students of my 4th grade class are studying Communication in thier Open Court Curriculum. We are learning about the various forms of animal communications, such as infrasonic and echolation. We are using expository text, realistic fiction, and educational videos in our investigations.
In addition, I would like to have them observe and investigate live animals. I would like to invite Maggie Hooper, a bat conservationist to come to our class. She brings a very balanced program about bats that includes a slideshow, conservation discussions, and three different live bat species. The bats are from a hospital where injured animals are cared for.
I would also like to take a field trip during the course of this unit. On June 16, I plan to take the students to our local zoo--The Oakland Zoo--for a class on Predator and Prey. Here the students will learn more about how animals communicate signs of danger, hunting, and flight in thier habitat. This zoo is home to a collection of Malayan Fruit Bats which will fit in nicely with the in-class presentation.
I am asking for your support to cover the cost of both events. My class is made up of many different cultures and languages. More than 90% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This is a Title I school. But more than that, my students are excited about the Unit Theme: Communication. They are fascinated with how animals use sound and gestures to communicate their needs. Both of these events would truly enhance their experience with their Language Arts curriculum.
Thank you for your support!
