My students are a diverse group of learners representing many different walks of life. They are intrigued by new opportunities that help them explore their curiosities about how the world works.
My students are innately curious and have a strong desire to learn new things to ultimately make an impact on the world.
I am fortunate to work with budding scientists who work well collaboratively. My students are strong academically and deserve the opportunity to work towards carrying out authentic scientific investigations.
My Project
The overall goal of this project is to allow students the opportunity to design investigations where they demonstrate their understanding of the scientific process. The model organisms selected to carry out this investigation lend themselves to students learning about adaptations, observing unique behaviors, and developing more questions that could potentially lend themselves to further investigation. For example, choice chambers can be used to monitor how termites, pill bugs, and fruit flies respond under certain conditions. Biodiversity in plankton are a strong indicator of health in water systems. As such, we can compare and contrast some species found in local water ways under various acidic or basic conditions. Students will also be able to set various experimental conditions using household acids, bases, and other materials.
This culminating performance based investigation will engage students in the process of doing science, while giving consideration to student choice.
My students are generally more engaged when they are able to take ownership over their learning and this project will allow for that with appropriate supports.
