Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a high-poverty school, I have the opportunity to work with a group of students from a variety of backgrounds who all contribute unique skills and experiences to our classroom.
Our class is made up of a multilingual and global community of learners, with over half the class speaking a language other than English at home.
These bright, innovative, spunky students are enthusiastic readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and historians. They deserve the best education in the world!
My Project
Growing up in an urban, low-income environment, our students have not had many opportunities to experience ways of life outside of the city streets they live on.
Our school community would love to have our 5th graders experience a living history program tied to nature, economics, and politics that will provide them with tangible insights into another time.
On this overnight field trip, both 5th grade classes will travel together to Angel Island, where they will become privates in the Union Army based at Camp Reynolds. Students will get to go on hikes, practice Morse code, bake bread, and conduct night watch as they spend the night in the army barracks.
As they experience what life was like on the island in the 1860s (gas lamps and all), students will be learning about the political and economic interests of the North and South at the time. They will develop 1st person point of view narrative writing skills through letters written home, as well as mathematical conversion skills through the study of standard and military time.
Overnight field trips are expensive, with program, transportation, and food costs totaling to an amount that our families are unable to pay for on their own. Our 5th graders are busy running bake sales to raise their own money, but they need a little extra help. Please consider donating so that all of our students are able to experience an overnight field trip that will give them life-long memories and strengthen their independence and love of learning!
