Andiamo in Italia!: Let's go to Italy!

My students need 40 Italian-English dictionaries in order to write and perform dialogues and skits in Italian. Collins are the best brand but any good medium-sized dictionary would be great. We also need the Dictionary of Italian Slang and Colloquial Expressions.

I teach Italian, levels 3-8. My students are bright and enthusiastic. I like to teach vocabulary and grammar as they relate to the real interests of my students. We work on a number of projects over the school year, for instance, my Italian 7 class are writing short skits based on characters from popular sitcoms, such as "Friends", "I Love Lucy", "The Honeymooners". The objective is to allow for a situation in which students are writing , speaking and listening in Italian. The sit-com characters enable for humor and ensure the students active engagement. The problem is that the text book dictionaries are very limited and this particular class is comprised of 42 students. It is difficult to help that many students with unfamiliar vocabulary. If each student had access to their dictionary, they would be able to work more on their own and learn how to use a dictionary as well.

our obstacle is that the text book's dictionary is limited and we only have 43 minutes of class time. Words in English, as well as in Italian often have more than one meaning. I would like to teach my students how to look up vocabulary words and be able to distinguish which part of speech and which sense of the word they are looking for.

I teach between four and five different Italian classes each day. I am in three different classrooms. I would need at least one class set of dictionaries in order to be able to do more quality writing and speaking in my classes. These students work very hard and have quite creative imaginations but, their Italian vocabulary is limiting them from writing as creatively as they think. I also think that having their dictionary would give them a sense of ownership, respect and responsibility. Skills in using a dictionary in Italian can be applied to usage of English dictionaries as well.

I think your help in buying these dictionaries for my students would tell them that are worthwhile and that someone has respect for them. New York City high schools are overcrowded and students often feel they are less than important but, schools should be all about the students.
