Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an amazing community. It is a very poor community. Our district/school provides free breakfast, lunch and dinner to each student. The families and children are very appreciative. The majority of children speak Spanish, learning English as a second language. We also have a large population of students with special needs. I have a mixture of students who are proficient in English and unfortunately, some that are not. I also have three students this year with IEPs (Individualized Education Program), two with autism. I have been teaching at this school for 19 years, in second grade, kindergarten and third grade. Some of these children grow up with single working parents. Some children grow up with one or both parents incarcerated. It is very important for me to set up a classroom in which my students feel safe and loved, as well as a place that is academically rigorous. I am a strict but fun teacher. I feel it is important that I set up a very structured environment. These children deserve the best!
My Project
Students, especially in kindergarten, need to be able to learn how to work independently. This is a huge year to establish good work habits and to set the foundation. I am asking for a set of fiction and non fiction stories with CD’s. I use these during small group instruction. While I am working with a small group, other groups are at their desks working on the Daily Five (reading to self, reading to a friend, listening to reading, writing, and working with words )They love listening to the stories and following along. This helps with fluency, comprehension, and instills the love of reading. I just bought 12 personal CD players, which I will have each two students share. The problem is I only have a handful of CD’s with stories. I would like to rotate stories twice weekly. Therefore it is necessary to get more of these stories with CD’s. Please consider donating to my classroom. I will be very grateful!
