Hello, and thank you so much for considering donating to "Mr. Gray's 3rd Grade Geniuses." We are an urban Title I school in Atlanta, GA. Our students are eager to learn and are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve academically and socially.
My students are some of the brightest scholars in the world, but many of them battle with the effects of poverty, with 100% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch and less than half of the class having internet access at home.
Nevertheless, my school goes above and beyond to motivate our students that despite their circumstances, they are able to attain the same levels of success in academics and life as any other student in any part of the world. Each student is assigned a teacher mentor as an extra layer of support, receives free breakfast every day, and other resources to help students meet their social and emotional needs.
As a first year teacher, I love building relationships with my students and am excited to see them grow as scholars and global citizens. Many of the resources in my classroom came from my own pocket, but my kids deserve that and more.
In today's society, virtual learning is a norm in classrooms across the country. When you walk into any public K-12 classroom, you will likely see the use of an interactive whiteboard, student laptops and/or tablets, and the use of online learning resources to accommodate direct instruction. As a primary school teacher, I utilized center teaching, where after my whole-group lesson, I break my class into small groups and have each group working on a task while I work with a group on a current strategy. Usually, when I am working with my group, the other scholars are on their Chromebooks, doing online assignments. This, coupled with the recent school closures and implementation of district-wide virtual learning, is the reason behind this project. Students need to take their eyes off of the screen and engage in learning in different ways, specifically through tactile experiences, like the use of hands-on manipulatives or board games!
By donating to our project, you will not only help increase student learning in flexible groups, but you will also give scholars a chance to play and enjoy themselves at the same time!
With these games, I will implement an "Arcade" center, where a group will get one of the board games and the flashcards. One member will quiz the other by showing them one of the flashcards and if they answer correctly, they will get to take their turn in the game. If they get it wrong, they will have to defend their thinking and prove the correct answer. Thank you for your support, my geniuses and I will be forever grateful!
