The New York State education standards for middle school require students to read 25 books in one year. I hold tremendously high expectations for my scholars and have set a goal for them to read 50 books in one year. After a lot of work investing in my students and their families, these 7th and 8th graders have already read nearly 50 books! My 8th grade girls are reading almost a book a week, and my seventh grade boys are incredibly motivated to read when I can find books that interest them. As a first year literacy teacher, I am limited to the books that I inherited from other teachers and the ones that I picked up at stoop sales. While I have introduced my students to the library and begged and borrowed from other teachers, my library just isn't up to par. Earlier this year, we kicked off the Great Reading Marathon. My students read more than 10 books each in 3 months. They averaged 12 books EACH!! After months of my students BEGGING me to do another Reading Marathon, we finally launched the SUPER READING MARATHON! But I am running out of books to keep them going! I need your help to keep my students RUNNING towards the SUPER READING MARATHON goal! In this marathon, students will read 15 books each in three months! I want them to have enough books to keep them invested in that marathon goal. Help my students to maintain the feeling of achievement and success that they have experienced. Help them to remain invested in our goal. Help me to inspire enthusiasm, initiative and a genuine love for reading in my students that can come only from reading books they really, truly love.
