Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 7th Grade reading teacher in a school with a large number of students in poverty. Many of my students have parents that are not home when my students come home from school due to work schedules. Also, my school district is cutting back so much that money for resources is extremely scarce.
This year, I taught "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" in order for my students to learn lessons from the Holocaust. To my surprise, my students were hungry for more. Unfortunately, I could not supply them with additional resources other than a couple of books I was able to purchase on my own. But this wasn't enough. I want to do a better job in teaching this important part of world history, and since my students were extremely engaged, it seems that it is something I must do.
I would like to incorporate another novel into my class for the Holocaust unit. I have read "The Devil's Arithmetic" and have used this novel in my student teaching. I have found it to be a powerful novel that engages students a great deal. In addition, I feel that students should be able to explore additional topics that they are interested in by having resources and additional readings like "Night" by Elie Wiesel for more accelerated readers, to "Maus" for those that are more artistically centered. My students wanted to explore more this year and I feel that with additional resources, I can not only satisfy their curiosity, but I can also encourage independent reading.
By helping to provide these material for my 7th grade students, you will not only be helping them to learn about the Holocaust, something that should not be taught lightly, but you would also be encouraging independent discovery, reading, and knowledge gathering. This interdisciplinary study is so important, and with your donation, my students would be engaged in a highly interesting, in-depth study of the Holocaust.
