I love my school and my students! My students come from a wide range of socioeconomic and racial backgrounds and have interests as varied as the colors of the rainbow. Many of my students speak English as a second language.
Each day in my sixth grade classroom, we learn from each other and grow all while having fun.
Students learn to amplify their strengths and find strategies to help themselves overcome and work through their struggles. By the end of our time together, my students are good at advocating for themselves and their learning needs and I am better at knowing how to reach and teach my students in authentic and meaningful ways.
My Project
In sixth grade social studies we learn about ancient history. For some students this is inherently an interesting topic for them. For others, not so much.
These resources will help my students connect to history by providing relatable characters and images for them to tie their new knowledge to.
The textbook we currently use is very thorough, but a bit dry, and hard to read for some of my struggling readers. These picture books will help students feel successful when learning about these ancient cultures from around the world.
With these picture books, we will be able to focus on literacy strategies during our social studies lessons. I am excited to focus on visual literacy with students and for them to analyze why the artists made the choices they did. Through these books we will also gain insight into daily lives of people who lived in these societies, a picture of their art and culture, and learn new vocabulary terms. It is my hope that these materials will not only help to engage my students in the social studies lessons but that their literacy skills will improve as well.
