Ancient Egyptian Headdress/Crown Art Project

My Project

In our Ancient Egypt unit we have learned about many of the remembered pharaohs and queens (and queens who ruled as pharaoh :) ), we are also continuing to learn about the Egyptian civilians and the social structure.

We will take a glimpse at the different types of crowns and headdresses that royalty wore and the meanings behind them, as well as some styles of wigs that many ancient Egyptian civilians wore.

We have also touched on the importance of trade that Egyptians made with other civilizations, which allowed them to import many luxury goods, including different materials to make different types of jewelry (ex: silver, lapis lazuli, etc.).

To tie a little artistic creativity into this unit, students will spend a few days on an art project where they will give themselves and crown/headdress. They will begin by printing off a side-profile picture of their head in black and white, cutting out their head/neck, and gluing it to the plain side of a brown paper bag. Then using colored pencils & the metallic sharpies, they can add a crown, headdress, wig, and/or jewelry. When the are finished they can add a cartouche (name plate) with their name written in Egyptian hieroglyphics!
