My Students

"Art is fundamental, unique to each of us...even in difficult economic times. Especially in difficult economic times, the arts are essential." â€"Maria Shriver. Shriver's quote reminds us all of the basic need to have art in education.

I teach 29 6th graders all subjects at a high-needs school.

Of that population I have 41% are low-level English Learners and 24% are students with learning disabilities. 87% of the students attending my school qualify for free- or reduced lunches which means many live below the poverty line. Many of my students struggle to have a pencil on a day-to-day basis, so asking them to bring in basic art supplies is difficult, as you can imagine. Many of my students never do any type of art work at home, so I would like to bring a variety of art mediums to them.

My Project

When I teach about early man, we learn about the Cave of Lascaux. I have the class research it on the Internet in order to practice drawing a scene in the daily life of a hunter-gatherer. When we study ancient Egypt, I have them write/draw their name in clay and create a relief drawing in clay. When studying China, I have the students create bamboo paintings using a special ink and brushes. And while studying ancient Greece and Rome, students will create artifacts similar to those they would find in a museum such as a vase, a mask, and a miniature statue. In the end, I teach my class how to draw 2-point perspectives, beginning with looking at a street corner, imagining being a bird looking down, and being a person looking upward. To do this I need the art materials requested, including paint, clay, and various types of paper.

There comes a change in each student where he or she develops a sense of pride in what they make because of its similarity to other works that have stood the test of time.

They enjoy writing like an Egyptian, drawing like a Neanderthal, or painting like the ancient Chinese. They no longer look at art as just an escape of their regular academia. They look at art as a way to communicate, to express, to tell a story in their own special way. I take pride when the students begin to "see" their work.
