Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at one of the largest elementary charter schools in West Dallas. We are a low income Title I school serving almost a 100% minority population receiving free and reduced lunch. Our scholars come from high needs home and need support, as well as our school.
Our scholars come to our school looking for better opportunities than the neighborhood schools.
Parents bring their children here in hopes to change the life trajectory of their children.
We are committed to doing whatever it takes to provides an excellent education for our scholars. We work to maximize our budget in the name of student achievement, but at the end of the day, resources are lacking to still get us to where we need to be for kids. Thank you in advance for supporting the work we are doing to close the achievement gap in West Dallas.
My Project
Research has proven that ESL scholars need visuals and anchor charts in every lesson to be successful. Unfortunately, being a charter school we do not receive full funding from the state and therefore have limited funds to spend on items to support our ESL scholars.
With access to daily, high quality anchor charts, our ESL scholars will be enabled to sail away deep into a sea of learning!
Right now teachers have to buy their own chart paper and the staplers that are given to them break easily and do not effectively provide the ability to hang and post anchor charts.
It is imperative that teachers have the ability to support our ESL scholar learning through visuals, and one of the best ways to do this is to have a print rich environment that is connected to visuals posted around the room. Having access to chart paper and more effective staplers will help us provide the needs of all scholars to learn!
