I have the pleasure of teaching high school CTE Health Science (CTE is the modern name for vocational education) which means my classes are, and need to be, more directly connected with the real world by doing real world activities, not just showing videos of things being done.
The students I work with are interested in three things: becoming future healthcare professionals, future fitness professionals, or at minimum learning more about how their own body works, often to better understand their own performance.
Even with these motivations, like all students, they desire the opportunity to put their lessons into practice in ways that lets them do some of what is done in the real world.
In regards to this project request, my students are motivated and inquisitive youth who want the opportunity to explore how science applies to their bodies in the activities they do every day.
My Project
The requested equipment will be used with existing Vernier data collection tools to provide new opportunities for the students to create human-model experiments, collect data, and test hypothesis using themselves as both researchers and test subjects. The accelerometers and data vests will allow students to track forces related to motion and provide them opportunities to create experiments such as testing the acceleration of a football kicker's leg or a baseball pitcher's arm, or even the impact force of a header in soccer. Respiration belt allows the opportunity to asses breathing without stopping the subject's action. The armor and data vests protect the sensitive collection tools while allowing them to collect data out of the classroom. All of this equipment is designed for years of student use.
Your donations to this project will both prepare and inspire the next generation of prospective healthcare professionals to better understand how their own bodies work and to teach them the value of evidenced-based practices as they learn to create real-life experiments by collecting data and results on peers, thus giving them the opportunity to both take physiological measurements and explain their results using both medical / scientific terms and patient-friendly language.
