My students need a document camera to analyze primary source documents and a map of the United States.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 10th grade DC History and 11th grade US History in a public charter high school in Southeast Washington, DC. 100% of my students are African American. 95% of my students lives in Wards 7 and 8. Unfortunately, this is the area of the District most plagued by crime and poverty. However, our school truly believes in the potential of every student. 100% of our students get accepted to at least one college before graduating.
A large part of social studies is gaining the ability to analyze. I really focus on this skill because this will help them be prepared for college and become lifelong critical thinkers. Although my students are 3-4 grade levels behind their peers, it is our responsibility as teachers to ensure they get the skills needed to compete with other students in a college atmosphere. In order to fully prepare them for college, we do a lot of analyzing primary source documents. This increases their ability to reason, distinguish truth from fiction, and ask critical questions about the past.
With a document camera, my students will all be able to look at the same primary source document at once without having to make copies. Copies distort the primary source document so much that that the words are often blurred. Blurred copies make the students that much less interested in reading an old document. A map of the United States would also allow me to have a visual for all of my students to see--which is something we do not have at our school.
Please make this dream a reality in our classroom. This document camera will surely prepare my students for college by improving their critical thinking and analysis skills, which are both essential skills for any college-bound student. It would be amazing to be able to analyze a document together as a class. The map will also be an invaluable aid in the classroom.
