My students need 55 copies of "Animal Farm" to read and annotate in class.

I teach reading to some amazing 6th and 7th grade scholars. They are amazing for quite a few reasons, but one thing that makes them stand out is their love of reading. I put books in front of them and they eat them up as fast as they possibly can!
My school works with scholars from grades 6-8 in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood of Chicago.
Our classes are rigorous and strict, creating a strong focus on academics and developing well-rounded scholars. Our goal is to close the achievement gap by helping students be competitive in tough world of Chicago selective enrollment schools.
My scholars love to learn and are always questioning. When they finish an assignment early, they pick up a book and read for fun. They get excited by requesting books to add to our library and love to share books with each other. I want to help them foster that love of reading.
This year, we have had to read books through photo copies. Whenever we start a new book, the scholars have to compile the copied pages on their own in order to have the full book.
All year we have been practicing the skill of annotating a text.
My goal is that scholars learn how to read with pen in hand for the rest of their educational career (and also while they read for fun!) to help them with their comprehension skills. They have the skill down now and I want them to apply it to our last book of the year: "Animal Farm." In order to reduce monetary stress on our scholars' families, I want to provide each scholar with their own copy through donation! That way, we can bring the joy of analyzing literature without any stress.
