The students I teach have developed an appreciation for reading material that is culturally responsive and relevant. Over the course of the last couple of years my co-teacher has done a great job of securing books through DonorsChoose.org and other mediums to provide our students with content that they can connect and relate with. It’s been amazing to see them grow their interest in reading and connect with the text on a deeper level. Please help my students by helping purchase another set of books that will help continue their growth as readers!
My Project
In my English classes my co-teacher and I do our best to use content that is culturally responsive for our students.
In addition, we also like to pick texts that allow our students to connect while also broadening their worldview.
As teachers in a school that is located in one of our city's poorest zip codes, our students do not always have the opportunity to experience things outside of their neighborhoods. We hope that in our class we can develop an appreciation for reading that will allow them to broaden their worldview and be open to new/different cultures.
Trevor Noah's memoir is a book that we believe will allow our students to connect and learn about a culture that is different to their own.
