Help me give my students an engaging, fun reading adventure where the books and the setting will take them underwater to learn about nonfiction texts and features.
I am a Special Education teacher that co-teaches this year in two elementary inclusion classrooms. Our school is a Title I school with many disadvantaged students. About one-third of our students are from low-income households.
Our classes currently have a variety of students including those with special needs.
They are an energetic group that has various learning styles and needs. The students have enjoyed doing breakout rooms and theme days to enhance their learning and engagement. They are always surprised and enthused to find out what we will do next. I can't wait to unroll more surprises as the year progresses!
My Project
Please help my students be transformed to an underwater scene with tasks related to nonfiction text features. The students will read about different features of their surroundings like coral reefs, underwater creatures/animals/fish, currents, and various oceans. They will use these readings to pick out important information and use text features to help them complete specific task cards related to the different nonfiction features.
Students need to remember to look at all the aspects of text including the nonfiction text features like headings, captions, maps, and diagrams.
It is important for them to see the necessity and how these features add to gaining information and understanding the information to a deeper level.
