Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class of third grade students in the South Bronx LOVE to learn with color and media! I have worked hard to provide them with laminated, interactive learning centers, whiteboards and markers to practice math, shiny and colorful books, and even time on our school's computers. However, the most exciting new addition to our classroom has been our overhead projector and projection screen, donated by a generous DonorsChoose supporter. As soon as I pull down the screen and dim the lights, my eight year olds turn towards me with excitement to begin our lesson.
Unfortunately, before I begin demonstrating a new writing technique or sharing an article with them, my kids have to watch me roll back our classroom rug and drag the extra desk holding our projector across the floor. Recently, one of my students covered her ears when I pulled down the projection screen, in anticipation of the screeching sound the desk makes on the floor. This unpleasant preparation wrecks the momentum of our lesson and lowers my kids' enthusiasm for our activity. Precious learning time is wasted in this setup, and in refocusing my students after they are distracted by the commotion.
I am requesting a rolling AV cart for our overhead projector. In addition to making transitions to the overhead more seamless, this cart can be stored in any part of the classroom and wheeled to the center when it is needed. My extra desk is currently blocking valuable space, because it needs to be close to the front of the room. The cart also has three shelves, which will add to much needed storage space in my classroom. Finally, the cart I have chosen will actually add to the happy, child-friendly space I have tried to create for my kids: it is made of safe plastic and is purple and white.
With children that are so far behind in so many subjects, every second counts in my classroom. We are making big gains in all subjects, but we need your help to keep us “rolling” along! Please make the resources that we have been so lucky to receive even more effective in my classroom. Thank you for your consideration!
