"Being Autistic just means I think differently from you" were the volunteer words that came from one of my mainstreamed autistic students in my regular education classroom. In my reading/English Language Arts fifth grade classroom, you might see one student on my stage, while another might be sitting with a lap desk.
"It's better to be an original than a copy".
Each day I try to bring out the uniqueness in each of my students. Whether it's sports, art, literature, oral communication, or music...you will shine. I am fortunate to have four high functioning autistic students into regular education room this year. These students have so much to offer to our future. Amazing insight, vocabulary and higher level thinking is what you'll see when you interact with these particular students. Our school is known for it's welcoming environment. Because our students see this from adults daily, they are able to carry on that tradition. Our students see no disabilities, no language barriers, no color. We accept diversity and because of that, are often recognized.
My Project
I want to start a handbell choir for students who are interested. We would perform for one of our Parent Teacher Organization nights as well as other events. I have seen so many children who have an ear for music, but who aren't able to carry out that gift. Because I teach high functioning autistic students, sensory items are needed in my room. Often students are having difficulty staying in a desk for a long period of time. The bean bag chair would be an option for those particular students. I want to meet the needs of all of students and see them excel in areas where they have a high interest.
Donations for these items will help my students feel successful.
Outlets need to be made available for all students. Having these items in place will ensure success in the classroom and will help promote a better future FOR our future generation.
