I teach in a Title I school where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. My classroom is EC inclusive, meaning that I have Special Education students, as well as students who are learning English as a second language, and students whose abilities cover a wide range. This is a diverse group of children, all coming to school with different backgrounds, experiences, and needs.
My students love coming to school and they're excited about learning new things!
Many of the activities and materials they encounter in the classroom are new to these young children. Coming from a low-income area as they do, they often don't have opportunities to participate in the experiences that most of us assume are available to all children.
They are so appreciative of the activities and games that are provided for their education and enjoyment. As we reach mid-point in the school year, they continue to amaze me with the progress they've made, not only academically but socially, emotionally, and physically. It is so exciting to watch them grow!
My Project
Halfway through the school year, my students are reading and writing and growing fast! In my Exceptional Children Inclusive classroom, I have students at every level of ability and achievement.
It can be challenging to provide differentiated instruction for each of my students while promoting independence and encouraging them to take responsibility for their own learning.
The Mobile Storage Cart will provide a drawer for each student to keep his individualized work and tasks. During our Daily 5 Literacy Block, each child will be able to go to his drawer and choose from several activities that have been selected specifically for him. This will support differentiated learning in a classroom that includes a wide range of abilities, as well as encourage my students to take responsibility for their own learning. Students will be able to work at their own pace on the assignments they choose and I will be able to tailor the work to fit the needs of each child.
The Tablet Storage and Charging Station will provide a safe and accessible place for students to store and charge their tablets. They can begin to take more responsibility by learning to return their tablets to the charging station and can plug them in to be ready for the next person. The Vertical File will give me a place to keep weekly activity folders and books for small reading groups. And the Writing Center will provide a well-organized spot with all the necessary materials to encourage and support independent writing activities.
Having their materials easily accessible will allow smoother transitions in the classroom, increased independence for students, and greater differentiation so that each child gets more of the individual attention he needs and deserves.
