Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school with about 500 students, in which the 4th and fifth graders have been selected to participate in the Farms for City Kids program for a week. The majority of our student population is Latino or African-American, many of whom reside in temporary housing facilities in our South Bronx neighborhood. Of our student population, over 100 students have special needs and 98% of our students are eligible for free lunch. Despite these odds and challenging circumstances, our students come to school each day and are encouraged to see our school's vision, for all of our students to "Be our Best, Love Learning, and Inspire the World!"
With a continued perspective on strong instructional practices and improving student outcomes, we are focusing on supporting our students' academic, social and emotional growth and development.
This focus is important in that we believe students learn best by regular interactions with adults who know them well in a supportive and safe environment.
My Project
This project will help cover the cost of bus transportation so our students can participate in the Farms for City Kids program.
Our field trip to Spring Brook Farm is that special place where inner-city students receive exposure to living like a farmer for a week!
Our students will experience real farming skills which can't be duplicated in a classroom or within a city environment!
This opportunity to attend Spring Brook Farm in Vermont will enrich the lives of our economically disadvantage inner-city students and provide them with an abundance of interactive learning activities that will provide them with their social and emotional growth and development.
By working together in groups, our students will learn how to respect nature and the animals that they help feed, care, and clean during the week. The Farms for City Kids program promotes self-awareness towards oneself and to be mindful of others, and it strives to build students' self-confidence, respect, and their social and emotional needs, as they overcome challenges they may face in everyday life.
