I have the awesome privilege of working with students who have various levels of hearing loss. I may have the same students and their families for many years in a row, which is undoubtedly a unique aspect of my job! I move with my students from one grade level to the next. Currently, with one family, I am in a 20+ year stretch teaching two of their children!
Building long term relationships with students and parents leads to a unique bond, which pushes me as a teacher.
I must make sure each year I am stepping up to meet their next level needs in areas of academics, social and emotional, hearing loss self-advocacy, and transitional goals (goals that focus on what a student will do after high school).
My students are positive young people who try their best, and enjoy learning! I strive to provide them opportunities to build a love of learning, and love for each other. They are a great group of students.
My Project
In today's classroom, having technology to use is a vital key to opportunity! Opportunity to explore, to discover, to find answers, to ask questions, to develop both independent and collaborative skills, to make contacts near and across the globe, to meet others like you and others completely different...and that's just for starters!
Although my district has laptops, they are in high demand and not readily available, thus hindering opportunity!
As an itinerant teacher, meaning a teacher who travels between multiple buildings/classrooms to teach different students throughout the day, scheduling and securing laptops can be frustrating and many times not possible. This lack of access to technology limits students from developing and enhancing their skills, across academics and life skills.
My desire is to obtain two Dell 3190 laptops that will be used as dedicated laptops for the students on my caseload in grades 6-8. By having dedicated technology, the opportunity to access technology will always be at our fingertips! The opportunity to download and install specific software and apps for students with hearing loss can be a reality! Dedicated laptops will allow opportunity for better efficiency of planning daily activities and delivery of curriculum. The internet provides tremendous opportunity for the enhancement of language development, the location of visual resources, and for the connection of my students with deaf/hard of hearing peers and role models, from far outside our local community. My students thrive on using technology, and have asked to use it on a regular basis. They look forward to having this opportunity!
Thank you for contributing and making this opportunity a reality by providing my students with consistent access to technology!
