Most teens do not think about what they eat. At school students are offered a buffet of knowledge, and much like a buffet of food, some knowledge is consumed in greater amounts than others. Through research and reading strategies, I want to teach them how to be educated consumers.
The students I teach are in the 8th grade.
Our school is located in rural Western North Carolina. Over 70% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The community they live in was once a hotbed of furniture and textile manufacturing. Unfortunately the community has only seen marginal positive job growth in the past 10 years. Nevertheless, these kids are provided a safe, fun, and exciting learning environment that many times is their official outlet socially and intellectually outside of the home.
My Project
Omnivore's Dilemma is an extremely popular book that helps inform readers about the world of processed foods. Considering 70% of the American diet is processed, I question what percentage of people knows what is in processed food. I want students at the very least to walk away from reading this book with the ability to make an informed decision about the food they consume.
Students will use the book as a resource and springboard as they delve into specific research topics of their choice on the topic of processed foods. The students will then create a research project using MLA and APA citation devices, both of which are mandatory for research in high school and post-secondary education. My dream is every year I teach I not only foster excellent reading skills, I also create passionate readers who read with a purpose, and I think this book will help.
Your donation to this project will have an effect on the students in my class this year and in years to come.
I have read excerpts from the book to them and the excitement is on the rise. Yes, excitement over reading and research! The students are on board, so please; let your generosity inspire them more. When they realize that strangers are willing to help them, they will be amazed and flattered.
