The latest advances in educational technology are absolutely amazing, especially to a teacher who has taught for twenty-six years. I want my students to have access to the newest technology in our classroom for exciting learning activities in every subject area.
My twenty second grade students are eager to learn and love using technology whenever they can.
We have two computer labs in our school, but we have over 600 students who need to share the labs. Each class has an hour a week of scheduled time in the labs. Because of the lab situation, we have started to get some of our own technology in our classroom through DonorsChoose. We have acquired some netbooks to be able to access the Internet thanks to Hewlett Packard and generous donors. Now, I would like to get an iPod Touch for my students to let them utilize the many educational apps that are available for every subject.
My Project
I am really excited about trying the iPod Touch in my classroom. I have read the research results of many studies that have shown significant reading gains in speed, accuracy and comprehension in less than a year. One that really interested me dealt with improving fluency by having the students record themselves reading, and then listening to themselves for immediate feedback. I would definitely like to try that with my students.
However, there are so many other uses for the iPod Touch. We can communicate with our epals in Australia using the video capabilities. The students can listen to online books and play games to reinforce reading and math skills. They will be able to take photos with the iPod Touch and share them with others. They can create media presentations using the photos and videos that they take. We can download and store all of the music that we would like to use in the classroom. The possibilities for learning are endless and very exciting!
I may be one of the older teachers, but the use of technology in the classroom is very exciting to me.
I want my students to have the chance to use the newest and best technology available. They are fantastic kids and deserve nothing less.
