Help me give my students a 32GB iPad, 6th Generation with WiFi and a Targus hand strap case. The rugged case and Apple Care Protection will help ensure the technology is working for the student projects.
My fourth grade students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds. For some of my students, school is one of the only stable things that they can count on. Kids move in and out of our school due to housing and transportation difficulties. This can disrupt their education, but the students at my school are very resilient. They come to school excited to learn each day. These kids love to be busy!
Our school is located in Southern California in a high-poverty area that is adjacent to more affluent neighborhoods.
The overwhelming majority of students are Vietnamese and Hispanic second language learners. More than 80% of the students receive free or reduced fee breakfasts and lunches. Student homes typically do not have computers or internet which results in a "technology gap." I would like to give my students the opportunity to explore and learn using STEAM.
With budget cuts to local schools, there are less resources available for hands-on STEAM lessons and experiences. Many of the students at my school do not have access to the internet, or even a computer, at home. This puts them at a disadvantage when compared with students in a more affluent area. With the iPad, my students will have the ability to create amazing presentations using a variety of media. This could all be accomplished from anywhere in the classroom!
With the technology requested, my students will have opportunities to try computer coding and programming as well as explore STEAM lessons.
We will use the iPad to create video projects that will deepen their understanding of concepts while polishing their presentation skills. We will use green screen technology to transform learning. For example, we have a Genius Hour time each week where the students research a “thick question” in order to create a passion project to present to the community. In addition to these activities, students would be able to translate a class newsletter for parents. With the iPad, they would be able to have use of a Vietnamese and Spanish keyboard when it is needed.
