I teach in an Alternative Learning classroom in Arkansas . My students are 5th and 6th graders. I can have up to 12 students in my classroom. Many of my students struggle with behavior disorders and often believe they are not capable, or worthy, of learning. Despite the hardships that most of my students have to deal with outside of school, they come to school everyday ready to learn. My students really thrive when doing hands on or technology-enriched activities. Despite how the world may view my students, they are very smart and creative in their own way. They just need to feel like someone believes in them.
I always promise my students that I will do everything in my power to make sure that they are successful. I believe an iPad will be an essential piece of technology for virtual learning. Having an iPad will be instrumental in helping my students with behavior disorders. I can provide lessons and resources to give my students the extra support needed to understand material that is sometimes difficult for them. The requested iPad will be used to teach my class on Zoom when needed for virtual learning. Also, I will use the iPad to create and assign Nearpod lessons for my students. These Nearpod lessons will be used in math, science, social studies, literacy, and social skills. I will also use the iPad to create interactive math manipulatives for learning. To address my students´ social and emotional needs, I will incorporate Positive Penguins. Positive Penguins is an interactive, educational tool to help children understand why they experience a range of challenging emotions. In a fun way, it gives them practical ways to understand and cope with these emotions and, most importantly, change the way they think. Positive Penguin would be great for my students with behaviors disorders, because they often struggle with understanding the range of emotions.
