An iPad For Twenty-First Century Science and Project Based Learning
My students need one more Apple iPad to explore twenty-first century science content and participate in project based learning. This additional iPad will make it so we can have 8 students working on projects at time.
My students will inspire you. They represent many cultures and ethnic groups and speak more than eighty world languages. About forty percent of students qualify for English Language Learner services. About eighty percent of students are eligible for free or reduced price school meals.
My students love learning and come to school with a passion to learn.
They are learning to hold high expectations for themselves and their academics regardless of their challenges outside of school. Our classroom emphasizes Effort = Success!
As their teacher, I want to provide a classroom environment that supports each individual learner, builds community and fosters their love of learning.
My Project
My classroom is a vibrant place where students believe that they are able to succeed and that they are supported both in and out of school. We work hard and persevere through challenges. We work in large groups, small groups, partnerships and individually throughout the day.
This is the last year (2018) we will be using science kits and we are not sure what materials or curriculum will be replacing those kits.
Technology at Tukwila Elementary is an integral part of our curriculum. The addition of this iPad will enable students to work in a groups of up eight students to explore the current science standards. iPads are an engaging way to integrate science content that is needed by every student in order to be science and tech savvy in today’s world.
There are great apps for the iPad. For example, iTooch is a science app that helps them learn how to investigate, evaluate evidence, measure and organize their thinking. For example, they are introduced to invisible matter, which challenges students to think about all that exists beyond their senses. Other topics reviewed include matter, magnets, energy, habitats, food chains, conservation, the human body, Earth’s resources, the rock cycle, weathering and more. Images, examples and review questions embedded in the review topics motivate students and help expose them to the wonders of the scientific world that surrounds us.
