Help me give my students an iPad to enhance their reading abilities! This will allow students to use self- guided apps to increase word recall, reading fluency, increase vocabulary, and mainstream assessments.
I teach at a rural school with an extremely high poverty rate, an exceptionally low socioeconomic status, a complete 100% free lunch status, and a staggering 25% of the students in this building are considered special education students. The school holds a Title-1 label and this particular location is home to 100% of the district's severely physically and severely mentally handicapped students.
I hold the position as an instructional interventionist, working with grades 1-3 and approximately 120 different students per year.
My Project
An iPad for my classroom will allow my struggling reading students to become more engaged with reading through a technological device. It would give the students a platform for self-paced reading and vocabulary goals. This device would mainstream assessments by allowing both students and teachers to record and store valuable data on each student.
The classroom iPad would eliminate the need for up to 80,000 paper copy assessments, per student!
Each reading test potentially using 5 front and back pages per test, per level, per student. Each student could be given, on average, 36 leveled assessments, each containing 10 copies on 5 pieces of paper, with all 85 students, equaling an excess of 80,000 copies and sheets of paper; drastically reducing our carbon footprint.
