Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with the warmest, kindest, silliest group of mixed general education and special education students. They work so hard, both in academics and to help each other succeed.
They have never had a normal year of school.
They missed three months of kindergarten when the pandemic began, and last year they went back and forth between in person and at home learning, often with very little warning. Some of them stayed home all year and saw their teachers only through a computer screen. They are bright, kind, warm-hearted students, and they deserve the world.
My Project
My class has students with a wide range of abilities and some of my students use special apps to help them learn during independent work times. These apps might help them learn social skills (Teach Town) or reinforce the basics of reading (Fast Forward). While our school district does supply the students with dell laptops, they are notoriously buggy and the touch screens don’t always work. The apps my students use need a good touch screen as many of my students with IEPs lack the fine motor control to use a trackpad (for now!)
This iPad will mean the difference between a child with special needs getting frustrated at their laptop instead of learning, and the same child being able to forget about the technology under their fingers and focus instead on their learning.
It will also help these students be more independent as using an iPad or iPhone is something most of them do all the time, and logging in to their laptops and starting up the program they want to use is a long, arduous process that not all of them can do alone.
