An iPad for Kindergarten English Language Learners

My Project

I work in a New York City public school. My students are a diverse group of children. They are of different cultures and ethnicities. My students are English language learners. At the young age of five, they are ready to take in every bit of knowledge I can share with them. This is the very beginning of their school career. This precious time will shape their perception of what school means to them. I want them to eagerly come to school each morning with smiles on their faces and confidence in what they can accomplish.

There are many times throughout the day, when my ELL students need a visual image to help them understand vocabulary.

While reading the story of "The Three Little Pigs", my students did not understand what straw or bricks were. I would like to hold up the iPad to give them visual images of new vocabulary. It can be quickly and spontaneously used, when the need arises. I would love to allow my young learners to use educational apps that will help with their understanding of vocabulary, letters, sounds and mathematic concepts. The iPad would make a wonderful center item for the children!

As a former theater teacher, I know how performance builds confidence and creativity for the children! I often incorporate theater into my curriculum. I can use the iPad to video the children as they perform a choral speaking piece. When the children use instruments to perform a song, I know they would love to see their faces and hear their voices. The ipad will be an incredibly valuable resource that I will use in so many different ways. My English Language Learners will benefit tremendously from this iPad.
