Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a unique and amazing school. We proudly take up two complete downtown blocks alongside City and Federal offices, courthouses, independent restaurants, art galleries, and business office complexes, providing excellent educational services, including before and after school for the children of the downtown employees. Childcare, breakfast, lunch, and snack are all provided, giving parents the time they need to get to work on time without worrying about their children's safety and welfare while they work.
We are a project school designed to meet the needs of working parents who are employed in the downtown area.
The school is small and only serves 2 classrooms of approximately 20 students each at each grade level. The students are chosen by lottery and there is a long waiting list for admission.
I teach in a double classroom and "share" 42 kindergartners with a strong teaching partner. We collaborate daily to provide the best learning opportunities we can to create students who are well-rounded and fully engaged in learning. The children are bright and inquisitive. Despite their long day, they are actively engaged and love to come to school.
My Project
My kindergarten classroom is lively and filled with fun, active learning. Sadly, we do most of our work on old, discarded, mismatched tables. While that doesn't deter from our joy of learning, a bright and beautiful work space could make our days even better. We are looking to replace 2 of our old, brown tables with modern, colorful ones tp make the space we work in more inviting.
When I moved into my current classroom 3 years ago, it was a drab and ugly space.
I have slowly been upgrading the furniture, usually by paying local craftsmen to repair and paint what we currently have in order to not be wasteful. However, our mismatched, laminate topped tables are not "fixable." I would love to continue my goal of creating a beautiful and functional classroom by replacing them.
My kindergarten students participate in almost an hour and a half of independent work stations while I teach small groups to read using The Daily Five model. In my 33 years of teaching, I have curated an amazing collection of highly engaging activities to keep them busy and occupied while I pull small groups. My school is amongst the highest scoring schools in the county, despite our district's demographics (100% of our students qualify for both free breakfast and lunch), so this means no Title I money for extras...ironic. Through DonorsChoose.org, I am hoping to provide a beautiful, modern workspace for my students. Many of the children participate in before and after school activities, as well as their time with me, in this same classroom. They are in school longer than a normal adult work day. Please help us bring some 9-5 (actually 6:30 am to 5:30 pm) joy into our lives.
