An Instrument for Every Student in Band: A New Euphonium
My students need a euphonium! Another euphonium will allow my students to play along side each other and practice at home, instead of sharing one instrument!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The East Side area of San Jose, CA is a very diverse neighborhood. Many students are first-generation American citizens, English Language Learners, and have parents that are struggling to meet the cost of living expenses in Silicon Valley. Most of my students' home lives are challenging; parents work just to have a roof overhead and food on the table. Almost all my students receive reduced-price or free lunches. 6 years ago the Music Department was almost nonexistent at our high school. The Band consisted of only 20 students, and the award-winning Choirs and Jazz Band classes had vanished from campus. Over the last few years, a rejuvenated student interest in music has allowed the program to grow to nearly 90 students. We now offer 2 levels of Wind Band and a class dedicated to percussion techniques.
This blossoming of the school's music department has presented a new challenge: ensuring that every student has an instrument to play!
Our school simply does not have the number of instruments needed to accommodate the growth of the music department that we have been experiencing, and many of the instruments we do own are antiquated and worn out.
My Project
Music is an essential part of a student's growth and intellectual development. Aside from the correlation between a student's involvement in music and higher performance in STEM areas, music provides opportunities for students to collaborate, perform, and express themselves.
Our school simply does not have enough instruments for the growing student involvement in our music classes, and many of the instruments we do have are worn out and outdated: this new euphonium is the next step to in solving this issue.
Acquiring this instrument will allow each of our Euphonium students to have their own instruments, instead of sharing. This way they can both perform at the same time and can each practice at home!
An increasing focus on STEM and tech careers has left no funding available for performing arts in our school district. Students are often faced with a choice to purchase their own instrument, or simply quit playing music. It is my goal to allow an opportunity to any student who wants to participate in music classes without needing to consider the financial cost of the equipment.
