Help me give my students an actual copy of the book Hatchet. Many of my students do not have access to the internet or a computer. I want to give them this book during this pandemic to read.
My students are amazing. Many have challenges they deal with that many adults couldn’t handle. For some, school is their only safe place. I care about them and respect them. This entire situation with schools shutting down due to the pandemic has me heart broken. I worry about the ones that need the food bags, emotional support, and a word of encouragement. My students are fifth graders. This grade is hard anyway. It’s the middle school years where everything is awkward for them anyway. If I can help them find peace for a few hours a day, I want to.
My Project
My students are amazing. Many have challenges they deal with that many adults couldn’t handle. This entire situation with schools shutting down due to the pandemic has me heart broken. I worry about the ones that need the food bags, emotional support, and a word of encouragement. Many of my students are having to babysit younger siblings and are just trying to make it. We live in a poor rural area where internet access is far and few between. I want to be able to give each student an actual book that we would normally read in class, so they can escape to the wilderness with Brian. In the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, Brian uses his survival skills and overcomes challenges alone in the deep woods of Canada. I feel like this, overcoming adversity and surviving through it, is what some of my students deal with daily. I hope this book allows their minds to escape for just a few moments from the craziness they are dealing with right now. I also hope my students realize that the trials Brian went through made him stronger and that he survived. I want them to feel like they can make it through life’s obstacles and become stronger because of it.
