Ms. G from Honolulu HI is requesting Instructional Technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students an Elmo Visual Presenter to see modeled lessons and realia as well as a way to display their work on smart-board technology.
I love my student population of English Language Learners. I have been teaching students who are new to the U.S. and Hawaii for 16 years. Their perseverance and courage of learning a new language while also navigating a new culture and school is admirable.
Often, when students arrive in the United States, their role in their family may switch; whereas their parents and guardians may have supported them in their home country, these students often become responsible for helping their parents.
Thereby placing a huge responsibility on their children. Time and time again though, my students embrace this responsibility. Although my priority is to teach students English, I also introduce them to resources and technical skills that help them negotiate the many new expectations placed upon them.
The English Language Learners in my classes have been identified at the "beginning" level of English language proficiency. Students at this level of English proficiency often need direct instruction to learn parts of speech, grammar, and basic writing skills.
The English Language Learners in this project will be identified at the "beginning" level of English language proficiency. Students at this level of English proficiency often need direct instruction to learn parts of speech, grammar, and basic writing skills.
By teaching students through an Elmo document camera connected to a smart-board, students will learn new technology and computer skills.
Students will apply their English language knowledge by crafting stories of their experiences in coming to Hawaii. Students will use Google Slides to apply the technical skills learned through the smartboard.
Taking this project one step further, students will share their stories with ELs or general education students at our nearby elementary school. Students need to be heard and their experiences validated. This project provides an authentic experience in which students meet, speak, and read their stories with other students.
