What came first...the chicken or the egg? That is exactly the type of question I would like my multi-grade high ability students to ponder. I teach a large group of second and third graders in one classroom. They are all high ability students and love learning. Our classroom is part of a brand new school. Many teachers left valuable resources and materials at their older schools to help start a new school and now many teachers are struggling to find funds to purchase materials they have created valuable lessons with.
For many years, I have participated in the wonderful experience of hatching eggs in an incubator in the classroom for students to see this amazing cycle take place. It is always a highlight of each student's most memorable memories throughout the year. With funds being low and my building being a brand new school, the possibility of receiving an incubator for my students to observe the life cycle is very slim.
One incubator is all we need to put this plan into action. I have a friend who supplies the eggs and willingly takes the chicks back to her farm. All students in my classroom and school benefit because of the excitement of the 21 day experience. Students eagerly count down the days as they learn many facts about animals and life cycles. These lessons are all integrated across the curriculum so students are able to understand the concepts and standards from all subjects. Once the first peeps begin, students are amazed at getting the opportunity to "watch" a chick come out of an egg. In fact, teachers and parents are also caught up in the fascination. It is an opportunity that one doesn't easily forget or truly able to witness through a video, book or movie. There's certainly nothing like the real thing!
This project is so extremely important to me because I have been able to see the smiles and life long learning that takes place in my students. Your generosity could make this dream come true for my classroom. It is an opportunity no student will forget as they are able to partake in this wonderful cycle.
