This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach second grade at a low-income Louisiana school. On average, my class began the year reading at an end of the year kindergarten level. Most of my students receive limited academic support at home.
My second graders love listening to CD's. They enjoy music, books read aloud, or math facts raps. They learn a lot of things through songs. Unfortunately, most of the things they listen to outside of my classroom are not educational. Also, most of them receive very little educational help, if any, at home.
My students need something to listen to at home that will reinforce the learning that takes place in the classroom, as well as teach skills that they lack. A copy of Rock 'n' Learn Phonics would provide each of my students something to listen to at home that they enjoy, as well as give them practice with skills that will reinforce their learning.
You will make it possible for my below grade-level students to have an opportunity to connect school learning and home learning. This project will allow them to develop the phonics skills that they lack, closing the achievement gap that I see in my classroom daily.
