Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Approximately 70% of our students qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. We also have a high English Language Learner population. Many of our students come from immigrant families and speak a second language at home. Many of my students are not proficient or even close to grade level in math.
My goal is for all my students to feel proficient and successful in grade level math skills.
I have several students who struggle in math and my goal is to provide them with multiple learning opportunities and methods, so that they no longer have a fear for math. I also have several advanced students in math, and my goal is for them to continue to grow their conceptual knowledge of math.
My Project
I need an easel to help students during small group instruction. I have students who I instruct in small groups for math. Having a portable whiteboard, magnetic surface makes it easier to help different groups of students. A whiteboard is necessary for me to model math concepts, as well as for students to be able to come up and demonstrate their work. The easel I'm requesting has storage bins behind it to store math manipulatives I use with my students for math.
Many of my students need small group instruction in Math, using manipulatives (math tools/aids), and a whiteboard surface, to focus on specific skills they are struggling with.
An easel will help me have a portable workspace, so that I can meet the needs of these students, without distracting the entire class. I will be able to move the easel to a location that will be conducive to the learning of my students. I often team teach with another teacher, and I do not have access to the classroom whiteboard during this time, when I work on interventions with a small group. An easel will solve this problem.
The easel will also serve as a workstation for groups of students to work collaboratively on math problems. I have my advanced math students work in groups to "Challenge Math" problems (advanced math) and the easel could be a 'special' treat for them to be able to use.
In addition, my students are fortunate to have a number of community volunteers who come and work with them in small groups on various projects that involve math, science, and computer science. A dry-erase surface is often required to work out problems or draw out diagrams. An easel this size, will be easy to move around to classroom to meet these needs.
