Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I want to do a play," one of my students recently mentioned. With the tests now out of our way, we have greater flexibility to do special projects with our kids. I want to introduce my students to the world of Shakespeare with the first Shakespeare I read - A Midsummer Night's Dream.
I work at one of the largest elementary schools in the South Bronx that has a diverse, yet talented group of students. As a fourth grade teacher, part of my job is bringing students to higher levels of thinking. What better way to do so than to bring Shakespeare into the classroom?
I will use the class set of books to first read through the play with my students, and then have a selected group perform parts for the grade and school in our auditorium. When I mentioned the idea to my students they were incredibly excited. My goal is to not only use the books this year, but also to extend the project to an after-school project CARE program. In the right context, Shakespeare, through literacy and drama, can open a new world of thought for students of all ages. I want my students to have the same opportunity many others have in wealthier districts.
When I read an article in the New York Times about a teacher in California who led a successful Shakespeare program in his class, I knew it was something I wanted to do in my own room. This set of books will allow my students and I to explore Shakespeare at their level and give them an opportunity to take ownership of their own learning. In addition, my students will be able to be proud of the play they put on at the end of the year.
