Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third graders always have a love of learning, and they love books. I try to motivate them to read by introducing them to book series and they become hooked! In a society where technology is now taking over, it is very rewarding to see a child open a book and read without any distractions. Unfortunately many of my students have limited access to quality books. Many of them come from low income families. Others have parents who work full time and don’t have time to take them to the library. For most of my students, the classroom is the only place where they have the opportunity to be exposed to books.
My Project
My students have always had a love of books. Unfortunately they have very limited access to great literature at home, so for many of them, my classroom library is all they have. I have always tried to provide them with quality books that are leveled, including book series which they love. They are welcome to choose as many books as they like, keep them at their seats for as long as they wish, and even take them home as needed. Through the years, the books have become very worn and ripped. I have tried to replace them as much as I can, but it has become very expensive and the number of books available in my library has dwindled. It would be amazing to give my students this year the gift of a brand new library!
